Storage, Heat And The Expiry Date

Storage advice on a label is four words long and gets ignored accordingly. It is worth two minutes, because the most common storage mistake is also the most intuitive one.

The bathroom problem. Medicine cabinets live in bathrooms, and bathrooms run hot and humid several times a day. Heat and moisture are the two things that degrade botanical material fastest. The most natural place to keep a bottle is close to the worst place for it.

What actually goes wrong. Moisture gets into the capsule shell and the powder inside clumps. Heat accelerates the breakdown of the more delicate plant compounds. Light does the same to a lesser degree, which is why supplement bottles are so often opaque. None of this is dramatic and all of it is cumulative.

What to actually do. Room temperature, away from direct sun, lid closed properly. A kitchen cupboard away from the hob or oven is close to ideal, and it has the secondary advantage of sitting near the meal the capsule is supposed to be taken with.

Leave the packet in. The little sachet in the bottle is a desiccant and it is there to absorb moisture that gets in when you open it. Throwing it away removes the only humidity control the bottle has.

The expiry date. On a supplement this is a best-before rather than a use-by: it is the manufacturer's statement about when the declared contents can still be guaranteed at the declared amounts. A bottle slightly past it is usually a potency question, not a safety one. A bottle badly past it, or one that has been stored hot, is worth replacing rather than arguing with.

Why this connects to buying six bottles. A six month supply sits in your house for six months. Check the date on arrival, store the spares sensibly, and open them in order. That is the entire maintenance burden.
